The head of the FBI detailed would-be Donald Trump assassin Thomas Crooks' shocking online activity just days before his attempt to kill out the former president.

Chief Christopher Wray enlightened lawmakers on the chilling internet history found on a laptop linked to the assailant who took aim at Trump. Wray revealed, "How far away was Oswald from Kennedy? " popped up in a Google search, a nod towards Lee Harvey Oswald's deadly shot against President JFK back in 1963.

This unnerving search by gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks occurred on 6 July, merely a week ahead of the shooting directed at the Republican heavyweight in Butler, Pennsylvania .

Wray recounted these details in front of the House Judiciary Committee today.

It was also detailed that shortly before shooting at Trump, the would-be killer piloted a drone just 180 away from the stage set for the ex-president, all while broadcasting live footage.

Agents scouring through the evidence retrieved both the drone and its controller from 20-year-old shooter Crooks' vehicle and are sifting through them as part of the deep dive into his past and possible reasons for his crime.

Wray made a vow to the MPs that the FBI would "leave no stone unturned" in getting to the bottom of a shooting he slammed as despicable and horrific.

He said: "I have been saying for some time now that we are living in an elevated threat environment, and tragically the Butler County assassination attempt is another example - a particularly heinous and public one - of what I've been talking about."
