WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed new information on how the shooter prepared for the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life.

“On July 6th, he did a Google search for, quote, how far away was Oswald from Kennedy,” Wray said.

Wray told lawmakers this search was on the same day he registered for the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“That’s a search that obviously is significant in terms of his state of mind,” Wray said.

Rep. Jim Jordan (D-Ohio.) pressed for answers around a drone Thomas Crooks used.

“Two hours before, he’s flying a drone in the in the vicinity of the rally?” Jordan asked.

“About 200 yards away,” Wray replied.

Wray said the shooter purchased a ladder but did not use it at the scene. He confirmed Crooks fired eight shots during the rally, as eight cartridges were found on the roof.

“Why was Crooks allowed to get off eight shots?” Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) asked.

“Well, that, I think, is something we’re still digging into,” Wray told Bishop.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) fears violence like this is born from political rhetoric getting out of hand.

“Could you describe how the FBI looks at this relationship between rhetoric and action, and what you are seeing around the country?” Nadler asked.

“There is a right way and a wrong way under the First amendment to express your views,” Wray said. “And violence and threats of violence is not the right way.”

Wray promises the FBI will continue to investigate to discover a motive, and if anyone else was involved in this attack on the former president.
