After a successful soft opening, husband and wife team and owners Jim Weir and Doris Esmeralda Ayala decided to have an official grand opening of Esmeralda’s Cafe in Butner.

With Mayor Linda Jordon, Mayor Pro Tem Michel Branch, Council Members Judy Cheek, Ed Sosa, town officials, family, friends and employees in attendance, Ayala and Jordon cut the ribbon to mark the special occasion.

Weir said a friend had purchased the old Barbecue Barn property and soon realized she was not prepared to open a restaurant. In stepped Weir and Ayala, who already own a restaurant in Durham, to help their friend with revamping the facility.

“I rolled up my sleeves and went to work,” said Weir with a smile.

Esmeralda’s now has a bright, vibrant and inviting look as you walk into the restaurant.

The couple has poured their heart into making the family friendly restaurant inviting according to Weir.

“We have upgraded a lot of the facility including the kitchen area,” he said. “We are looking forward to everyone stopping by for breakfast, lunch or dinner with our southern, American, Latin American, and Honduran dishes.”

With the soft opening, Weir said they started out with breakfast which includes the traditional pancakes, biscuits, eggs, omelettes and a variety of meat selections including country ham. They also serve Honduran specialties, including Baleada Con Asada (beans, cheese, cream, avocado, eggs and steak) or Desayuno Catracho Deluxe (beans, cheese, cream, avocado, carne asada, sweet plantains, eggs and tortillas).

“We also have a wide selection of pastries and specialty coffees, including hot and iced lattes, cappuccinos, frappes and southern sweet and unsweetened tea,” Weir said.

“At lunch and dinner time the menu includes sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads, soups, quesadillas, steak and chicken dishes as well,” he said. “A lot of the items on the menu are what we like to eat. There is a BLT, cheese steaks, empanadas, shrimp dishes and a great Ribeye steak.”

Esmeralda’s Cafe also offers a large kids menu, including mac and cheese, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Weir said they had been closing about 3 o’clock, but are going to look at staying open until 7 p.m. and possibly later on the weekend for those that want to get dinner.

While dinning at Esmeralda’s Cafe, one may be treated to live music. “We will have live music as often as possible,” he said. Weir hopes to find some local musicians and singers to provide entertainment. He said that eventually they would like to have a small stage area for live events.

Jordon wished Ayala and Weir much success with the new business and cut the ribbon to officially welcome and open Esmeralda’s Cafe in Butner.
