Man accused of starting backfire during Thompson Fire to be in court
BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - An Oroville man accused of intentionally setting a backfire during the Thompson Fire will return to court today. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Harold Pulley is charged with one count of arson, saying he set fire to grass and forest land off Oro Quincy Highway. CAL FIRE Law Enforcement said a witness told them Pulley was using a propane torch to light backfires to protect a house in the area.
Chico man held to answer for arson in Stirling City area
BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - A Chico man was held to answer for two counts of arson of forest wildland from June 15. Brock Gregory Herrit, 48, was held to answer after a preliminary hearing convinced a judge to hold him for two counts of arson in the remote forest three miles northwest of Stirling City in north Butte County.
City of Chico to test water at sanctioned homeless camp
CHICO, Calif. - Butte County Public Health said they will be working with the city of Chico to test the water at its sanctioned homeless campground on Eaton and Cohasset. This comes after a person conducted three field tests with questionable-grade test kits somewhere near the water spigot, according to City Manager Mark Sorenson. Sorenson went on to say all three tests came back “positive for fecal coliform.”
Thompson Fire Knocked Down
GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - A week later, the Thompson Fire north of Oroville is finally 100% contained. The fast-moving fire that started on July 2 and threatened heavily populated areas of Oroville/Kelly Ridge and burned right up to the Oroville Dam shut down power plants, caused evacuations, closed access to the lake and downstream recreation areas and cancelled Fourth of July firework shows, not only in Oroville but in other areas of Butte County.

Bacterial outbreak reported at Chico sanctioned camp
CHICO — Two waterborne bacteria may be linked to outbreaks of illness at Chico’s sanctioned campground by the Chico Regional Airport. Butte County Public Health is aware of a possible contamination of coliform bacteria in a water tap installed at the site on the northwest corner of Eaton and Cohasset roads. E. coli and shigella are suspected. The reports of bacterial infections follow a shigella outbreak reported at homeless camps in Oroville around May.
Seasonal fire restrictions enacted in five northern California counties
NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Starting on Wednesday, seasonal fire restrictions go into effect for all public lands managed by the Redding Field Office in Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Siskiyou and Trinity counties. This means no building, maintaining, attending, or using any open fire, camp fire, charcoal barbecue, or stove anywhere outside of designated fire-use campsites.
