July is a traditional time for county fairs in South Dakota. From July 29 through August 3 the tradition continues at the Butte/Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Nisland, SD. This year’s fair theme is: “Sew it, Grow it, Show it!”. There’s still time to enter as entries close on July 19th.
KOTA Cares: Artemis House works to support victims of domestic violence
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Artemis House has gone by several names over the years but they’ve had the same goal in mind: helping survivors of domestic violence. “Artemis House first began in 1979 as the Women in Crisis Coalition and it was formed by a group of concerned citizens in the northern hills to create a nonprofit organization to help women in crisis situations with domestic violence. Over the years it’s transitioned into the Victims of Violence Intervention Program where we serve all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and part of that is through our Artemis House shelter,” Executive Director of Artemis House Renae Servaty said.

BELLE FOURCHE-The recent Butte County Commission meeting involved an extended discussion surrounding the petition to adopt an ordinance to regulate the hand-counting of election ballots, and a full story will follow in the upcoming weeks to clarify the reasoning behind the vote of the commissioners. The commissioners voted to reject the petition on the basis that the “initiative attempts to enact an ordinance the county does not have the authority to enact.” Chair James Ager further explained that the petition “as written” violates State and Federal law.
