BUXTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A man died while kayaking at the North Carolina Outer Banks on Saturday, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials.
The incident happened Saturday morning near Buxton in the surf off Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 43, located east of Cape Point Campground, a news release from the National Park Service said.
The kayaker launched his vessel near Ramp 43 and was trying to “ride a wave” about 50 yards from shore, the news release said.
Witnesses saw the man’s kayak capsize during the incident.
“They swam out to help pull the man from the kayak and brought him to the beach,” park service officials said.
CPR was started on the man, but he died. The victim’s name was not released but officials said he was 72 and from Florence, South Carolina.
“We send our condolences to the kayaker’s family and friends,” Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent David Hallac said in the news release.
Dare County Emergency Medical Service and Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue and Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers assisted in the incident.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the death because it happened while kayaking, officials said.
