MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — A 72-year-old man died in a kayaking incident Saturday morning at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Florence, South Carolina man launched his kayak from the beach near Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 43, east of the Cape Point Campground near Buxton.

According to eyewitnesses, the kayak capsized while attempting to ride a wave approximately 50 yards from the beach. The bystanders swam out to help pull the man from the kayak and brought him to the beach.

A spokesperson for the National Park Service said Life-saving efforts were attempted on the man.

“We send our condolences to the kayaker’s family and friends,” stated Cape Hatteras National
    Seashore Superintendent David Hallac.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the incident.
