When two people enter a romantic relationship, they have the best intentions of being in it for the long haul. Unfortunately, sometimes people see sides of one another that they don't think they can tolerate forever, or something sets off a lightbulb in their mind that makes them realize the relationship isn't working. Members of the BuzzFeed Community and Reddit shared the moment they knew they would not marry their significant other. Here is what they said.

Note: Some responses have been edited for length and/or clarity.

    1. "When he and his friends forgot about me and left the bar while I was still in the bathroom."

    2. "My ex just ignored me, didn't do anything in the house because to him it was the 'woman's job.' He mentally abused me."

    3. "The guy I'm dating has said he never got attached to a pet he had in the past and wasn't sad when it died. He showed me previously that he didn't care much apart from family, friends, and the person he's dating, but as someone who cares a lot about many things. It didn't sit too well with me."

    4. "Mine was the day of our wedding. She told me to shut up because her mom was talking, and later at dinner, when we tipped the wait staff, her mom asked how much we should tip, and I answered we had it covered. My wife asked where we would get the money from. Our guests overheard and felt humiliated, but then my wife demanded an apology from me because her feelings were hurt after they all started throwing cash on the table. 10 days later, she flew back home, never to be seen again because she needed time and space."

    5. "When he got extremely heated over the smallest disagreements. When he told me he had five-figure credit card debt after years of dating and that his family wanted to borrow money from us."

    6. "I'd been with my partner for 18 unmarried years with two kids. We were both unhappy generally but were sticking it out. My breaking point was when my car broke down, and he came to pick me up; I had to cross the icy road to get to his car, and while dodging cars, I fell hard on the road, and a car almost hit me. I got up injured and got in the car. I was bawling, but he didn't bother to worry about my cuts and bleeds and said he was traumatized since he almost saw me get hit."

    7. "When I confronted her about keeping me a secret on her social media even though she wasn't a secret on mine. Instead of fixing it or at least compromising, she made excuses and chose to do nothing."

    8. "After six months of dating, I realized he really wanted to have kids, and I didn't. We'd talked about it before, but I don't think either of us had completely figured it out yet. He's now a happy dad, and I'm happily child-free with an amazing partner."

    9. "My ex always had time for friends, to the point that she literally took a day off work to spend time with a friend. Meanwhile, she always had too much going on to spend the night at my place. All holidays were spent with her friend group. Even after over a year, I was never guaranteed to see her on the weekend. Then, when her father suggested I go up to meet him on her next trip, she just kept putting off giving me details (am I buying my own ticket or reimbursing? Do I need to book a hotel?). Finally, she told me over dinner that she wanted to go alone. I just wanted her to be honest with me for once, so I waited for her to break up with me. She did the next time we saw each other after she returned."

    10. "Mine was when it took him two hours to arrive at the nursing home after my mother died. He lived 20 minutes away. My best friend lived an hour away and made it in 30."

    11. "For me, it was when both of my grandparents on my dad's side died within 24 hours of each other, and he wouldn't come with me to the funeral. We'd been together eight years at this point, but he wouldn't come because it involved travel, and he'd have to miss a day of work (unpaid). I knew then that I could never rely on him. By contrast, my now husband came with me to the funeral of someone he'd never met to support me after just a few months together."

    12. "He lacks self-control or accountability when he is upset. A couple of years into our relationship, a switch flipped in him, and he wasn’t afraid to hide his terrible temper anymore. I could never have kids with someone like that."

    13. "When on the day we were to get married, the woman who lived in the apartment below my then husband-to-be called me and said, 'I just left blah blah’s apartment, and I ****** him all night long.' It was the best decision I ever made not to marry him."

    freshbunny898

    14. "We are opposite on politics. After three years, I thought we had come to a place where we could have a few moments of respectful conversation. I said, 'We need a younger generation.' His response? 'Go F yourself, you stupid B.' And just like that. I’m single again."

    happykitten61

    15. "She had a serious problem with me going to the gym, partly because it was 'me time' and partly because it was one thing that made me feel confident in myself. We're talking maybe two hours a week, not all day, every day. One of my best friend's girlfriends hates him going to the gym because she's gained weight, making her feel bad. Wild!"

    16. "Mine was when he thought it would be funny to pick on my high support needs son."
