We haven't heard much from Ellen DeGeneres since the end of her talk show in 2022. But now, the former host is gearing up for a new comedy special, in which she looks set to discuss the events of the past four years.

According to a description of the special from Netflix, Ellen will get “candid about fame, parallel parking and life since getting ‘kicked out of show business.’”

In a statement, the 66-year-old said : “To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”

As you’ll probably know, Ellen took a step back from the public eye following the end of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2022. The daytime talk show concluded with its 19th season, two years after BuzzFeed News exposed allegations of a toxic work environment behind the scenes.

Current and former employees of The Ellen Show spoke with BuzzFeed News in 2020, revealing allegations of racism and bullying in the workplace. Employees also claimed that the show’s executive producers “engaged in rampant sexual misconduct and harassment.”

WarnerMedia launched an internal investigation into the matter. After this, Ellen delivered two formal apologies — one in a letter to staff and another on air — saying that she was “disappointed to learn” of the allegations and vowed to make changes, along with her fellow executives.

Three top executive producers were subsequently fired , and despite Ellen’s apologies, the show’s once-positive reputation was unsalvageable. In May 2021, it was announced that The Ellen Show would be ending for good .

Fast-forward to today, and Ellen’s new Netflix special looks set to feature the comic talking more than ever about the experience. However, some people are finding the whole concept a little contradictory.

On X, many users called out the irony of Ellen talking about “getting kicked out of show business” in a comedy special on the world’s most popular streaming service , for which she presumably received a generous paycheck.

For reference, Forbes reported that Netflix paid Ellen $20 million for her last comedy special in 2018.

One post on the matter with more than 70,000 likes read : “My favorite part of Cancel Culture is when canceled celebrities get their own streaming specials where they get paid millions to complain about being cancelled and out of work.”

Other posts on the topic echoed similar views, with some questioning why the show would be centered around her “getting kicked out of show business” when that isn’t necessarily an accurate description of what’s happened.

“Because nothing says ‘kicked out of show business’ like being paid millions for a Netflix special,” one user wrote .

“‘I will now explain how I was kicked out of show business and completely silenced during a comedy special on the world's largest streaming platform,’” someone else mocked .

“People who've been kicked out of show business don't have global premieres on Netflix,” added another .

Earlier this year, Ellen’s career was a prominent topic of discussion in her 27-stop standup comedy tour. During a sold-out show in Los Angeles in April, Ellen told the audience she got “ kicked out of show business ” because “there’s no mean people in show business.”

Describing herself as “the most hated person in America,” Ellen said the “hate went on for a long time” after the allegations surrounding her show made headlines.

Later in the tour, Ellen appeared to indicate that she will retire for good after her final special for Netflix premieres later this month. “This is the last time you’re going to see me,” she told an audience member during a Q&A part of the show. “After my Netflix special, I’m done.”

Whether she stays true to her word remains to be seen. Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval comes to Netflix on Sept. 24.
