People With Super Rich Friends, Tell Us The Moment You Realized That A Friend Was Wayyyyyy Wealthier Than You Originally Realized

Money is fascinating. It impacts nearly every facet of our lives, and yet it's often considered a taboo topic, even amongst the closest of friends.

Which is exactly why it can be really jarring when you realize that somebody you're friends with is in an entirely different economic bracket than you originally believed them to be.

So I'm curious, BuzzFeed Community , if you've ever had an experience in which you realized a friend was significantly wealthier than you had initially thought.

For example, maybe you believed you and a friend were in similar economic situations until you learned that they actually have a trust fund; they just don't like to talk about it.

Or maybe you made a friend in college and went back to their family's home over the holiday break and were shocked to learn their family had literal staff (like a personal chef).

Maybe you and your friend were talking about taking a trip together, and they offered up their family's private jet (and you were like, "Whaaaaat???").

This conversation happens within the scientific community a lot. Most scientists make between 130k and 600k a year, depending on position. That's middle to upper class. Then there are those with lucrative patents who can spend $12 million on a yacht without worry. Everyone is a colleague, and then there's the man who sold his work to Merck for $150M and living off of the interest....while most were simply bragging about their nice quaint home they were able to buy near a museum district.

I met an old man once when I was a kid who was hunting with a group on the neighbors property and our property. spent a couple hours following the group around while they quail hunted. tbh I was more interested in watching the bird dogs work than listening to the grown-ups. later back at the trucks I asked the stranger what his dogs name was. he replied "Roy" and asked if I was interested in working dogs. I told him I was and I wanted to be "a famous coonhunter and in the coonhunting magazine (Full Cry in those days). when he left our neighbor asked how I felt about meeting the richest man in the world. turns out that old man was none other than Sam Walton. the Walmart Sam Walton. the dog was one of several "old Roy's" and was pictured on the Walmart dog food bags. about 35 years later I actually got featured in a "coonhunting magazine" article too.
