It’s fair to say that Emily Blunt ’s kids weren’t rooting for her character in The Devil Wears Prada .

Based on a novel of the same name, the 2006 movie is all about Andy, played by Anne Hathaway , who gets a job working as a junior assistant to one of New York City’s most prolific fashion magazine editors, Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep .

Emily’s character — ironically also named Emily — is Miranda’s senior assistant, and, for numerous reasons, she isn’t pleased about Andy’s hiring, so she spends much of the plot being quite unfriendly toward her.

Despite not being the most lovable character in The Devil Wears Prada , the role significantly boosted Emily’s career in the 2000s. And now, she’s revealing what her two daughters think of her memorable performance in the film.

Speaking to Page Six last week, Emily said that 10-year-old Hazel and 7-year-old Violet — whom she shares with husband John Krasinski — thought she was “the meanest person they’ve ever met” after watching the movie.

“It’s incredible that it has such an indelible fingerprint on people. It’s people’s standby feel-good movie,” she said, joking that “it’s quoted to [her]” on a weekly basis.

Giving a shoutout to her castmates, Emily said they had “the time of [their] lives” working on the movie, which earned Meryl an Oscar nomination for Best Actress at the 2007 Academy Awards .

“At the time I was young, it was my first big movie,” she added. “I remember my agent calling me and telling me about the opening weekend. I was like, ‘Is that good?’ Like I didn’t know what was good.”

Notably, despite being nothing like her mean character in real life, Emily previously joked that she may have won the part because she was stressed about missing a flight during her audition, making her icy performance seem all the more authentic.

“Maybe it helped that I was strait-jacketed with time concerns and clearly in a pretty amped-up state anyway, which lends itself to the desperation of that character,” she said during an appearance on the Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast in 2023.
