A woman, whose friend told law enforcement arriving on the scene of a crash involving a stolen vehicle on Buffalo Road in Bybee that she began ‘acting weird’ after he bonded her out of jail, found herself being returned to jail shortly thereafter.

According to an incident report filed by Cocke County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Richard Hoover, he responded to the scene on June 25 and observed a Kia that had crashed into an embankment on the side of the road.

Hoover then spoke to Ashley Hairr, 30, who stated she was scared for her life and James Hall was trying to kill her with a towel. Her story got a little stranger when she reportedly told Sgt. Hoover there are cops involved and she was set up and would only speak to a specific detective.

Turning his attention to Hall, he told Sgt. Hoover that he bonded Hairr out of jail earlier in the day and after a while she began acting weird. Hall said while showing Hairr the stereo system he had installed in the Kia, registered to Hall’s girlfriend, Brandy Mantooth, Hairr jumped into the driver’s seat and began to steal the car. Hall said he attempted to stop the theft by reaching into the driver’s side window to disable the car.

Then Hall apparently went for an unplanned ride.

According to Hall, and per the report, Hairr took the car out of park and took Hall along with it while he was stuck in the driver’s side window.

Hall said Hairr drove through the field of his house and then off an embankment and struck another embankment. Hall said Hairr then backed up and attempted to flee again when she crashed into an embankment on the opposite side of the road where the Kia became disabled and he was able to remove himself from the driver’s side window.

Sgt. Hoover then reports he spoke to Mantooth, Hall’s reported girlfriend, who herself was being currently housed at the Cocke County Jail Annex, regarding her wrecked Kia. She said the only person that was authorized to drive her car was Hall and she requested for it to be towed back to Hall’s residence.

No wreck report was completed due to the vehicle not having insurance on it at the time.

Hairr was taken into custody for reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon involved and theft of property over $1,000. She was transported to the Cocke County Jail Annex and transferred to jail custody.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office advised bond was set at $3,000 for Hairr.
