Police arrest man in Baldwin shooting; still hunting for 4 other armed robbery suspects

A Long Island judge has set $2.5 Million Bail bond for a New Jersey man who police say threatened a Baldwin woman who was robbed at gunpoint last year in the driveway of her house with four other men.

Nassau County Police say Freddy Fermin, 38, was connected by DNA evidence to the brutal attack that took place on School Street, a dead end block in the village of Baldwin, Long Island, just past midnight on October 20, 2023.

In official sworn court filings, cops say five men – one, allegedly, Freddy Fermin – surrounded a female victim as she sat parked in her car in front of her house. One of the men allegedly pointed a gun at her, aiming through the front windshield, then pulled the trigger. A bullet shot into the car, “shattering the glass of the vehicle”, say police. The terrified woman was struck by glass around her, cutting into her leg, spattering blood around the car, causing “multiple lacerations” and “substantial pain.”

Describing the incident in the Felony complaint, police say the woman was then “forced” out of her car at gunpoint and dragged into her house.

Inside, say police, “defendant Fermin while aided by the others did zip-tie a male victim” who was inside the house. Police say the group of men “restrained both victims” while valuables around the house were collected. They determined that two guns were used to commit the crimes alleged that night.

An undisclosed amount of cash was also taken, according to police.

Investigators meticulously collected evidence that might help them identify suspects who participated in the armed robbery that took place that night. Their work paid off. In addition to surveillance recordings and photographs, police say they got “a positive Division of Forensic Services Evidence Bureau report” with a DNA match to Fermin. His DNA was recovered on the evidence at the crime scene, they said.

Fermin was charged with 7 Felonies – including 5 Violent Felonies – at his arraignment before Judge Vincent Muscarella this month. He pleaded Not Guilty to Burglary, Robbery and unlawful imprisonment charges. The judge set $2.45 Million partially secured bail bond. So far, that bail has not been posted.

Fermin returns to court October 30, 2024.

Police say the four other suspects remain “unapprehended”. Police did not say the men were not identified.
