Makayla Pithan Trumbo had been wearing a beautiful necklace containing her mother’s ashes for eight months when she received a frantic phone call last year from her sisters. Something was happening at Return to Nature funeral home, the Colorado funeral home they’d hired to make arrangements after their beloved mother’s February death, they told her. There was a big police presence at the property in Penrose, Makayla’s sisters continued, and reports of bodies that had been stored improperly.

The Guffey Mountain Car Show 2024, hosted, planned and coordinated by Guffey businesses the Wild Spirit Mountain Lodge, The Bakery, and the Colorado Mountain Distillers, was a huge success, according to Beth Hall, co-owner of the WSML. Hall took the lead on planning, she said, but it was a business owners and community members team effort.
U.S. 50 and Colo. 115 roundabout traffic impacts and work update
July 7-13 The Colorado Department of Transportation will close the Colo. 115 on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 50 during daytime hours on Tuesday. The closure was originally planned for July 8 but has been postponed to accommodate heavy July 4 weekend traffic. The closure hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The closure is necessary while crews pave the ramp as part of the U.S. 50/Colo. 115 Roundabout project in Penrose. Detour routes will be posted.

Plea deal offered to Penrose funeral home co-owners
A plea deal has been offered to the married couple who owned the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose where 190 improperly stored bodies were discovered last fall. Jon and Carie Hallford are facing hundreds of charges in Colorado including abuse of a corpse, forgery and money laundering. The investigation into the funeral home began in early October 2023 when neighbors reported a foul odor to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office. Investigators discovered 190 improperly stored bodies inside the building which was demolished earlier this year. The couple was arrested in Oklahoma in November 2023.
