A 98-Year-Old Ice Cream Shop From Chicago Is Opening in Southern California
Cathy Chaplin is a senior editor at Eater LA, a James Beard Award–nominated journalist, and the author of Food Lovers’ Guide to Los Angeles. Rainbow Cone, a 98-year-old ice cream shop from Chicago, is opening three locations in Southern California. The first store is slated to debut later this year in Orange County at 9527 Valley View Street in Cypress. The two other locations will be announced after the leases are signed, a rep tells Eater. Founded in 1926, Rainbow Cone is best known for its stacked ice cream slices that include five flavors perched on a single cone: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio, and orange sherbet.

A bear who climbed a tree in Chatsworth and stayed there for hours Tuesday is back in the peace and quiet of Southern California's mountain wilderness. Photos provided by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife show the bear with a history of adventurous travel resting in the wilderness after she was tranquillized and removed late Tuesday morning from the tree in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood. The bear drew onlookers from a nearby apartment complex after wandering around the business park, jumping a chain-link fence and camping out overnight on a tree branch.
