An unborn baby was killed and a man is facing potential charges following a crash Monday night in Caldwell.

Officers responded to the crash, at Middleton Road and Lincoln Avenue, just before 11 p.m., and found the driver and passenger of a vehicle stuck and in need of extrication, according to a Caldwell police news release. Officers learned the vehicle made slight contact with another vehicle before driving off the side of the road and landing in a ditch. The occupants of the other vehicle were not hurt, the release said.

The female passenger was 39 weeks pregnant and was taken to the hospital. Her fetus did not survive. The male driver of the car was also hospitalized and is facing potential charges for driving impaired.

“We are waiting for toxicology to confirm the level of impairment and source,” a Caldwell police spokesperson said via email.

“This is very tragic and heartbreaking. There is no excuse for driving impaired and the blatant disregard for human life,” Caldwell Police Chief Rex Ingram said in the release. “We will use every tool available to us to ensure justice is served.”
