The first game of the regular season for the Caledonia Area baseball team didn’t go as planned, as the Warriors were no hit by Zumbrota-Mazeppa 4-0 Friday, April 5.

But the team came roaring back with a big win over Winona Cotter the next day, winning 10-3 behind a solid outing by Drew Yahnke on the mound.

Friday saw the Warriors travel to Zumbrota-Mazeppa to face off against the Cougars for the first full game of the season. Unfortunately, first game jitters saw the Warriors go cold at the plate, with only a walk for their single runner on base during the game. The Cougars would go on to no hit the Warriors to win by four runs.

Garret Konz pitched through five innings, with Landon O’Heron in relief for the sixth. The defense was great, a staple for the squad — something they’ll be able to rely on throughout the year.

Saturday and warmer weather had the Warriors face off against the Winona Cotter Ramblers at St. Mary’s Max Molock Field for a 1 p.m. showdown. The first inning saw the squad strike quickly, with Konz and Jack Schmitz scoring on a passed ball in the first inning.

The Warriors scored on another passed ball with Will Allen coming in to touch home, and the third inning saw three runs come in, first off of a bases-loaded double by Owen Denstad to drive in two, and then another run off a fielder’s choice.

The fifth inning saw more run production through Will Allen, via a two-run double to left, then a sacrifice fly by Tanner Ginther brought the score to 9-3, after the Ramblers scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Warriors tacked one more run on, via another ball put in play by Ginther, with Allen coming home to score in the seventh inning.

Starting for the Warriors was Drew Yahnke, who went five innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, while walking four and striking out six to earn the win for the Warriors.

Landon O’Heron came on in relief in the sixth inning. O’Heron had a web gem defensive play while pitching — a bare handed snag on a ground ball to throw out the runner in the sixth. He also tacked on two strikeouts to help give the Warriors the win.

Top performers at the plate included Will Allen going 2-3 with an RBI, Ben Stemper going 2-2 with two HBP and three walks total, and finally Owen Denstad going 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

Caledonia baseball will have a busy week, starting with Fillmore Central at F-C on Monday, then traveling to Lewiston-Altura on Tuesday for a showdown against the Cardinals, then finally their home opener against the Dover-Eyota Eagles on Friday. Remember to come out and support the team.
