Aug. 2, 1949, in The Star: First Baptist Church of Oxford, one of the oldest congregations in Calhoun County, has become a corporation. Papers of incorporation have been placed on record in the probate office, pursuant to a resolution passed by the congregation at a business session on July 10. Because the church is organized now as a corporation, its trustees can now make loans for the church. The trustees of the corporation are W. C. Minshew, Tull C. Allen, Howard Paris, J. H. Harwood and Fred R. Heifner. The church is at present in the process of doubling the capacity of its Sunday School building in a project that’s costing a little more than $16,000.

Aug. 2, 1999, in The Star: The town of Ragland this past weekend celebrated its 100th anniversary, bringing together most of its 1,800 residents to mark the milestone. A Friday night parade with floats included 50-60 entries, said Kenneth Poe, Ragland’s director of Parks and recreation, which organized the event. The action started up again Saturday morning with an arts and crafts show, a hot rod show, an antiques show and a dragster car show. There were helicopter rides, a food court and of course a Womanless Beauty Pageant, which was won by Tim Ford, 38, son of Rev. Doug Ford of Hardin’s Chapel Church. A street dance and a fireworks show completed Saturday night’s planned festivities.
