Oxford, AL – Candidates for state firefighter certification are entering the final days of the Oxford Fire Department/Alabama Fire College Firefighter Bridge Program, an annual six-week initiative that enables certified volunteer firefighters to complete an abbreviated recruit school and transition to state-certified firefighters. This certification is a crucial step for those seeking a professional career in the fire service.

Held at the Lynn Elliott Fire Station and Training Center, the program combines classroom study, drill field practice, and hands-on training. Participants are rigorously prepared to perform essential fire ground functions under the supervision of an officer or experienced firefighter.

Fire Chief Gary Sparks highlighted the dedication of the current class, consisting of seven candidates from Oxford, Eastaboga, Jemison, and Prichard. “These individuals have shown exceptional commitment and skill throughout the program,” Sparks said. “Their readiness to serve and protect their communities as professional firefighters is commendable.”

The program’s culmination will be marked by a graduation ceremony scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, at Brookside Baptist Church, located at 405 Kirby Road in Oxford. The event will celebrate the achievements of the candidates as they take the final step toward joining the ranks of state-certified firefighters, fully equipped to respond to emergencies and safeguard the public.
