Hobson City Celebrates 125th Anniversary with a Week of Festivities

Hobson City, AL – Hobson City, Alabama’s first incorporated African American city, marked a momentous milestone with a week-long celebration of its 125th birthday, beginning August 11th. Established on August 16, 1899, Hobson City has long been a symbol of resilience, progress, and community strength.

The celebration kicked off on Sunday, August 11th, with a spiritual renewal service, followed by a vibrant Gospel Fest held in the city park. This event set the tone for a week dedicated to honoring Hobson City’s rich heritage and its remarkable journey.

On Thursday, the spotlight was on community engagement with the “Celebrating Our Heritage” focus group and a community celebration. This event not only honored influential community leaders but also featured a “Stop the Violence” fashion show, which aimed to raise awareness and foster unity within the community.

Friday’s highlight was the Mayor’s Annual Heritage Gala, celebrating the city’s 125th Founders’ Day. The Gala, themed “Tell Them We Are Rising…from Peril to Promise,” was a testament to Hobson City’s enduring spirit and progress. Mayor Alberta McCrory, who hosted the event, was praised for her outstanding leadership. The festivities were masterfully MC’d by Jeh Jeh Pruitt, a Hobson City native.

Special recognition during the Gala was given to Dr. David Satcher and State Representative Dr. Barbara Bigsby Boyd. Both were honored for their significant contributions and dedicated service, which have greatly impacted Hobson City and the broader region.

The week-long celebration concluded on Saturday with a Hobson City Family Reunion. The event featured performances by the Signature Band and Carmela Fleming, bringing together families and friends to celebrate their shared heritage.
