Mayor Alberta McCrory of Hobson City Receives National Mayor of the Year Award at Prestigious Black Business Conference

Hobson City, AL – In a momentous recognition of her leadership and dedication, Mayor Alberta McCrory of Hobson City was honored with the National Mayor of the Year Award at the 124th National Black Business Conference. The award, a testament to her outstanding contributions to the Black business community, was presented during the Booker T. Washington Pan-African Awards Gala on August 24, 2024, at the Hilton Atlanta Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The National Mayor of the Year Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the National Alliance for Black Business. It celebrates the exceptional efforts of mayors who have significantly advanced economic opportunities, community development, and social justice for Black communities. Mayor McCrory’s selection as the 2024 recipient highlights her tireless work in transforming Hobson City, Alabama’s oldest African American incorporated municipality, into a thriving center of Black entrepreneurship and cultural heritage.

Under Mayor McCrory’s leadership, Hobson City has seen a resurgence in local business initiatives, the revitalization of historic landmarks, and the implementation of innovative programs aimed at empowering Black entrepreneurs. Her vision has not only fostered economic growth but has also strengthened community ties, making Hobson City a model for other Black communities across the nation.

The National Black Business Conference, which ran from August 22 to 25, 2024, brought together over 1,900 Black business owners, professionals, and corporate leaders from across the globe. The conference served as a platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and celebration of achievements within the Black business community. The Booker T. Washington Pan-African Awards Gala, the conference’s crown jewel, celebrated individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to advancing Black economic empowerment.

Mayor McCrory’s award was presented alongside other notable recognitions, including the Booker T. Washington Lifetime Achievement Award given to The Honorable Johnny Ford, a veteran political leader known for his lifelong commitment to civil rights and economic development in Black communities. Other awardees included W3R Consulting as National Black Business of the Year, the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey as National Black Chamber of Commerce of the Year, and Morris Brown College as National HBCU of the Year.

In her acceptance speech, Mayor McCrory expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed her commitment to continuing the work that has positioned Hobson City as a beacon of progress. “This award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but of the entire Hobson City community. It is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to uplift our community and create opportunities for future generations,” she said.

Dr. Ken L. Harris, President and CEO of The National Business League, founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900, lauded Mayor McCrory’s achievements, stating, “Mayor McCrory embodies the spirit of resilience, innovation, and leadership that is crucial for the advancement of Black businesses and communities. Her work in Hobson City is a shining example of what can be achieved through visionary leadership and a commitment to economic empowerment.”

The gala, held from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST, featured a gathering of esteemed guests, including business leaders, elected officials, and community organizers, all dedicated to advancing the interests of Black communities. The Hilton Atlanta Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, provided a fitting backdrop for this celebration of Black excellence.

Mayor McCrory’s recognition as National Mayor of the Year not only celebrates her past achievements but also sets a benchmark for future leadership in Black communities across the United States. Her legacy is one of progress, empowerment, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
