Oxford, AL – The United Way of East Central Alabama hosted its annual Community Luncheon on August 24, 2024, bringing together a vibrant gathering of supporters, community partners, and local leaders to celebrate collective achievements and honor exceptional contributions. This year’s event was particularly special as it culminated in the awarding of the prestigious Lifetime of Excellence Award to Patricia M. King, CEO of the Sunny King Automotive Group.
The luncheon, held at the Anniston City Meeting Center, drew a large crowd eager to celebrate the impactful work of United Way and its many contributors. Shannon Jenkins, the dynamic CEO of United Way, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the attendees and community partners, emphasizing the pivotal role they play in the organization’s success.
“Thank you so much. It is always an honor to have you in the building,” Jenkins said, addressing the crowd. “It is a huge crowd and we are just so grateful that you are with us today and just enjoying the program and hearing a little bit about United Way.”
Jenkins also took a moment to recognize the significant contributions of community partners, underscoring their role in providing essential wraparound services. “We couldn’t do what we do without our community partners,” she noted. “You have a brochure on your table listing all of them. If you are here today and you represent one of our community partners, would you just stand at your table? We certainly want to thank you and recognize you.”
Among the highlights of the event was the announcement of the progress on the Martha’s Hope in the Holloway House project. This initiative, aimed at creating an emergency and transitional housing center with comprehensive wraparound services, is a testament to the power of community collaboration. Jenkins shared that the project is moving closer to construction, with plans now finalized and bids being solicited from local contractors.
“We are so much closer today to construction,” Jenkins said. “Plans have been completely developed, and our bid is out there to several local contractors. We will select a general contractor and construction can finally begin.”
The event’s centerpiece was the presentation of the Lifetime of Excellence Award to Patricia M. King, a distinguished figure in the community. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to community service.
The history of the Sonny King Automotive Group dates back to 1922 when E.D. King established the King Motor Company. Patricia M. King, known as Patty, has continued her late husband’s legacy of philanthropic leadership since taking over in 1990. Under her stewardship, the company has thrived and expanded its charitable efforts significantly.
“Patty King has continued and expanded the philanthropic legacy that began with the company,” Jenkins said. “Her love for this community is evident in the countless non-profits that have benefited from her generosity.”
Notable beneficiaries of Patty King’s philanthropy include the Knox Concert Series, the JSU Foundation, CAST, Boys and Girls Clubs, and many others. Since 2014, the Sonny King Automotive Group has donated over $182,000 to United Way of East Central Alabama alone. Patty King’s contributions extend beyond financial support; they include organizing and supporting key community events such as the Woodstock 5K, the Sonny King Criterium and Noble Street Festival, and the Sonny King Charity Classic Golf Tournament.
“Patty understands the profound fulfillment that comes from using our blessings to bless others,” Jenkins said. “She is, without a doubt, a blessing to our community. A quiet leader who shies away from the spotlight and accolades for her good work.”
The heartfelt presentation concluded with Patty King’s acceptance of the Lifetime of Excellence Award. King expressed her surprise and gratitude, reflecting on the legacy of her late husband and the continued commitment to community service.
“I’m humbled by your gift,” King said. “We do what we do at Sonny King because it’s been our history. My late husband did the same thing, and it’s not like I had a brilliant idea. It’s just that I’ve continued the work that he also did.”
The luncheon also featured remarks from Jackie Lowry, the outgoing chair of the United Way Board of Directors, who highlighted the personal and professional fulfillment gained from her service on the board. Lowry emphasized the importance of community involvement and the profound impact of United Way’s initiatives.
“As I look ahead to next year, when I will no longer be on the board, it gets me a little emotional,” Lowry said. “The board really does give so much of our time, but because we want to. United Way and the staff drive change in our community.”
The Community Luncheon was a celebration of unity, dedication, and the spirit of giving. It showcased the power of collective effort in addressing community needs and honoring those who make a lasting impact. The event concluded with a renewed sense of commitment to the ongoing mission of the United Way and its partners in creating positive change.
