Calhoun County, AL – Fall Planting: Trees and Shrubs by Betty Clark 9.25.24. I am sharing some great fall planting ideas that I have enjoyed from both the landscape and vases. Yes! You can use flowering trees and bushes as filler in your bouquets! I like spring early blooming red quince shrubs. The stems are not cluttered with heavy leaves but the red flowers are vertical eye candy. Also, gardenia bushes offer great specimen icons in the landscape pathways. Gardenia stems are lovely Southern Bell vertical stems in vases. Purple Diamond shrubs with hot pink blooms flushing offer both hedge appeal plus stems for vases. White Larkspur is a perennial plant that quickly grows into a shrub-like feature inside pots also. Tulip Trees are the Gone With The Wind options to bring nostalgic comfort to the landscape. Tulip Tree blooms can float in decorative water dishes. My favorite Camelia was my Georgia pink peppermint swirl blooms, from a 100-year-old tree. Camelias are great evergreen options for landscape appeal. September and October are good months to select your choices of shrubs and trees. You need to research the safe planting in the fall so they increase survival. Many newly planted trees and shrubs struggle with spring planting because of the increased summer temperatures. Enjoy your fall planting season!
