Gadsden State Opens Applications for Work-Based Programs on East Broad and Ayers Campuses

Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College has officially opened applications for two highly competitive work-based education programs: the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) and the Consortium of Machining Education Training (COMET). These programs are available at the East Broad Campus in Gadsden and the Ayers Campus in Anniston, with applications due by February 28 for students hoping to join the Fall 2025 cohort.

“These programs offer a unique blend of academic curriculum and invaluable paid work experience,” said Alan Smith, Dean of Workforce Development at Gadsden State. “We are preparing students for in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing.”

The FAME program offers students a two-year associate degree in Industrial Automation Technology, focusing on systems, processes, and equipment used in modern manufacturing. Graduates are trained to troubleshoot, repair, and improve automated systems.

The COMET program awards an associate degree in Precision Machining Technology, equipping students with the skills needed to design and manufacture precision parts to meet modern manufacturing standards. COMET students gain hands-on experience in advanced craftsmanship and attention to detail, making them invaluable in today’s competitive manufacturing sector.

Both programs utilize a hybrid apprenticeship model, allowing students to attend classes at Gadsden State two days a week and work for industry partners during the remaining days. Students earn at least $15 per hour while gaining real-world experience, offering a direct pathway to careers upon graduation.

“FAME and COMET offer an unmatched opportunity for students to learn the latest in advanced manufacturing while also earning a paycheck,” Smith said. “These programs prepare students for successful, long-term careers in industries that are in dire need of skilled professionals. The hands-on experience combined with the technical knowledge students gain makes them attractive to employers.”

Industry partners, which provide mentorship and training, include leading companies like Gadsden Tool Inc., General Dynamics, and Honda of Alabama for both the FAME and COMET programs. These partnerships frequently lead to full-time employment opportunities after graduation, strengthening the connection between students and the manufacturing industry.
