Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is preparing for another season of free Boating Basics and License Courses offered at locations throughout the state. These in-person classes provide hands-on training and direct interaction with local ALEA Troopers, making them an excellent opportunity for boaters to gain valuable knowledge about safe boating practices.

The courses cover essential information, including details about local waters frequently visited by residents, ensuring that participants are well-prepared for the specific conditions in their area.

Upon completion of the Boating Basics course, participants will receive a certificate, which Troopers will submit to ALEA’s Vessel Registration Unit. The agency’s Driver License Division will then add the vessel operator’s class to the participant’s Alabama Driver License. It may take up to 10 business days before participants can purchase their updated licenses online or at a county probate office.

Children aged 12 and older are eligible for a vessel operator’s license, though they must wait until age 14 to operate a vessel independently.

For more information or to enroll in a class, individuals can access the current schedule on ALEA’s website or contact the Marine Patrol Instructor. A one-time $5 application fee will apply, and there is a $36.25 issuance fee for the license.

These courses are part of ALEA’s ongoing efforts to promote boating safety and ensure all vessel operators are well-trained and licensed.
