Gadsden, AL – A simple message of kindness is poised to make a lasting impact on students in Gadsden. The Gadsden State Community College Police Department, in partnership with Gadsden City Schools and local leaders, has launched the Golden Rule Program , an anti-bullying initiative aimed at 5th-grade students. The program will be introduced through a series of school assemblies designed to promote compassion and respect among young people.

The initiative, inspired by Peter Gregerson’s book The Golden Rule: The Best Way to Live , focuses on encouraging students to embrace the principle of treating others as they wish to be treated. Gadsden State Police Chief Jay Freeman has been instrumental in turning these values into actionable strategies within the local community.

“By embracing the Golden Rule—treating others as we wish to be treated—we can establish a supportive school environment where every individual feels valued,” said Chief Freeman.

Gadsden State President Kathy Murphy emphasized the importance of addressing bullying, especially during National Bullying Prevention Month in October.

“October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to recognize the profound impact bullying can have on children and their families,” said President Murphy. “We have an opportunity to cultivate a culture of empathy that not only tackles bullying but also promotes resilience and well-being among young people.”

Local leaders, including Mayor Craig Ford, Gadsden Police Chief Lamar Jaggers, and Superintendent Keith Blackwell, have all voiced their support for the program, reinforcing the community’s dedication to ensuring a safe and nurturing learning environment for students.
