Anniston, AL – The United Way of East Central Alabama (UWECA) is thrilled to announce a significant development in the Martha’s Hope Center to End Homelessness project. During a recent review of construction bids, UWECA discovered a unique opportunity to purchase and renovate The Bridge, a facility owned by Anniston First United Methodist Church (AFUMC), located at 1400 Noble Street, Anniston, AL 36201.

Acquiring The Bridge could greatly enhance the project’s potential, maximize funding dedicated to the initiative, and expedite the timeline for opening. This collaboration between UWECA and AFUMC highlights a shared commitment to serve the community, particularly as The Bridge currently operates as the area’s cold weather Warming Station for individuals lacking adequate heating sources, including those experiencing homelessness.

The Bridge offers several advantages over the original construction plan:

    • 30,000 sq. ft. of additional space compared to the original design.
    • A fully equipped commercial kitchen for meal preparation.
    • Expanded office and counseling areas to better serve individuals and families.
    • Increased storage capacity and space for laundry facilities .
    • An elevator to ensure accessibility for all.

The facility’s prime location, adjacent to the original construction site at 1411 Gurnee Ave, Anniston, AL 36201, maintains the intended proximity while potentially transforming the original site into a beautiful greenspace or additional parking area following its demolition. Preliminary floor plan revisions and budgetary estimates for the necessary renovations at The Bridge have already been explored.

“We are thrilled about this potential new direction for the Martha’s Hope Center to End Homelessness,” said Shannon Jenkins, CEO of United Way of East Central Alabama. “The Bridge not only provides a cost-effective solution but also offers enhanced resources and space that will significantly benefit our mission to serve those in need. This opportunity allows us to repurpose an existing sound structure while following through on our original plan to clean up and demolish the former dilapidated site.”

UWECA remains dedicated to transforming lives in the community, and this new direction is expected to make an even greater impact. The organization expresses gratitude to all supporters and partners for their continued dedication to this vital project.
