Jax State Cycling Club’s Inaugural Season Cut Short by Hurricane Helene, but Success and Optimism Shine Through

Jacksonville, AL – The Jax State Cycling Club’s much-anticipated inaugural season came to an early and unexpected halt after just two races, as Hurricane Helene left cycling courses in Brevard, Lindsey Wilson, and Zirconia in ruins. However, despite the season’s abrupt conclusion, the club celebrated the success of its efforts, showing immense promise for the future.

Matthew Walden, the club’s president and Jax State’s sole racer this season, competed in the Cross Country (XC) and Short Track Cross Country (STXC) events, delivering impressive results. In his race at Auburn, Walden secured 12th place out of 19 competitors in the STXC event and 16th out of 24 in XC. Earlier, at Lees-McRae College, he achieved a commendable 15th-place finish out of 32 racers, overcoming a tough starting position at the back of the pack.

Reflecting on the brief but rewarding season, Walden expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments. “It’s been an incredible experience,” he said. “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved in such a short time, and I’m excited about the growth potential for our team.”

The Jax State Cycling Club also extended support to fellow teams in the South Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) that were severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. The storm caused significant infrastructure damage in western North Carolina, affecting not only race venues but entire communities. SECCC leaders have focused on stories of recovery and resilience emerging from the region.

Lees-McRae College Coach Tim Hall highlighted the importance of unity during difficult times, saying, “While man is no match for wind and water, the power of our spirit and stories will always triumph.”

Due to the damage caused by the hurricane, the SECCC postponed the 2024 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships and canceled the SECCC Conference Championships at Ride Rock Creek. Despite the challenges, the Auburn race allowed teams to come together in solidarity, providing a meaningful experience for those who could participate.

“We are grateful for the chance to compete at Auburn and for the support from the cycling community,” Walden added. “Our thoughts are with those recovering from the hurricane, and we look forward to future seasons with optimism and determination.”

Looking ahead, the Jax State Cycling Club remains committed to creating a supportive environment for student-athletes passionate about cycling. Though this season faced unexpected obstacles, the club’s resilience and spirit set a strong foundation for a bright future.
