    Jacksonville Garden Club Dedicates Bench in Memory of Dr. Sheila Webb

    JACKSONVILLE, AL – The Jacksonville Garden Club gathered this week, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Sheila Anne Webb with a heartfelt bench dedication at the Chief Ladiga Trail. Dr. Webb, who passed away on May 31, 2024, was a beloved member of the community, known for her passion for gardening, commitment to education, and love of animals.

    Sheila, affectionately nicknamed “Pee Wee” by her family, lived a vibrant life of 78 years, filled with adventures, education, and cherished relationships. She was a devoted aunt, a respected educator, and a passionate advocate for animal welfare. Survived by her nephews and niece, Sheila was deeply loved by her family and many friends in the Jacksonville community.

    Charlotte Hand, a close friend and fellow garden club member, shared touching memories of their friendship, recalling how they met at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. “She was fun and funny,” Hand said. “She got me involved with the Jacksonville Garden Club, and I got her on the board of the Terrapin Creek chapter of the Alabama Scenic River Trails.” Hand emphasized Sheila’s warmth, saying she made everyone feel welcome and was always concerned about others.

    Adele Green, another friend, reflected on Sheila’s impact, saying, “We became friends and shared many wonderful moments.” Green praised the garden club’s efforts in dedicating the bench, stating, “The ladies did a magnificent job, and I really appreciate that.”

    Linda Schiff, who worked closely with Sheila during her tenure as president of the Jacksonville Garden Club, spoke of her leadership qualities. “She was a well-organized, powerful woman,” Schiff remarked. “We accomplished many projects under her guidance, and she was a fun, motivating person to work with.”

    Dr. Webb’s impressive career included 27 years at Jacksonville State University, where she served as Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies for 16 years and as a Professor of Secondary Education for 11 years. Her academic journey was marked by a relentless passion for learning and teaching, earning multiple degrees from the University of Iowa, including a BA, MA, and PhD, as well as a Master of Divinity.

    Active in her church and local community, Sheila was known for her dedication to service and her love for animals. Her commitment to improving the world around her was evident in every aspect of her life, from her work in education to her involvement in local charitable efforts, including the beans and rice ministry at St. Luke’s.

    The bench dedicated in Sheila’s memory serves as a lasting tribute to her spirit and contributions. As attendees reflected on her life and legacy, they hoped the bench would remind future visitors of the joy and kindness she shared with everyone she met. The dedication ceremony was a beautiful celebration of Sheila’s life, ensuring that her impact on the community will not be forgotten.
