'My neighbor is threatening to sue me unless I remove every tree in my yard'

Some people are very specific about their yards. That was the case for a recent Reddit user who posted a scenario of their neighbor threatening to sue over trees .
The poster moved into the house in California in 2021 and the sellers disclosed the trees needed to be trimmed every three months to the neighbor ’s fence height.
“The HOA seemed happy with how we were trimming them, so every time he filed a violation, they sided with us.”
After living in the house for two years, the Reddit user received a letter from the neighbor's lawyer. The neighbor said they would sue them and the HOA for wrongful conduct as they failed to keep the trees trimmed. The neighbor also claimed the HOA allowed past residents to get away with it too.
The HOA suggested the two neighbors go to mediation. During mediation, the neighbor demanded certain landscaping, including maintaining all trees at 50 percent height and completely removing a tree.
The Reddit poster thought those demands were ridiculous, but the neighbor threatened to take them to court if they didn’t comply.
“He states that if we do not comply, he will take us to court and request us to pay all legal fees (currently at $12K) + compensation for the lack of enjoyment of his yard ($15K).”
In the replies, people told them to lawyer up. “My first recommendation is that you seek legal advice. My opinion as someone who is not a lawyer is that his suit will not work out the way he thinks it will.”
