(The Center Square) – A California campaign wants Gov. Gavin Newsom to do something about illegal fireworks from Nevada.

TNT Fireworks, the state’s leading wholesale distributor of State Fire Marshal-Approved, Safe and Sane Fireworks, has long promoted fireworks safety and education, including co-sponsoring legislation allowing local authorities to impose administrative fines for illegal fireworks possession and use.

TNT also works with local anti-illegal fireworks groups across California to address issues specific to Golden State communities, while at the same time pushing for stronger fireworks ordinances that include fines.

TNT’s concerns include the loudness of illegal fireworks from Nevada. Pointing to a report from the San Francisco City and County Grand Jury about illegal fireworks in the Bay Area, TNT said it’s obvious the fireworks are not ones approved by California.

“The San Francisco firework explosions booming around the city are more likely from fireworks that are illegal in California, but which are for sale in the neighboring state of Nevada,” the report stated.

Meanwhile, law enforcement in Nevada is doing what it can to combat illegal fireworks. A social media post from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department advises people that officers will be keeping an eye out for people not obeying the law.

“Our officers have confiscated entire truckloads, stacked floor to ceiling, and containers filled with fireworks that won’t be set off in neighborhoods this year,” said LVMPD on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Fines start at $500!”

Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick said her office needs the community’s assistance to go after illegal fireworks.

“They can cause fires and injuries and many people and pets are highly sensitive to the loud explosions caused by fireworks,” said Kirkpatrick in a news release. “We are asking people to only use safe and sane fireworks as part of your family celebrations and to please leave the big shows to the pros.”
