Gavin Newsom-Marshawn Lynch podcast, explained: Why California governor is teaming up with former Seahawks RB

There have been plenty of odd trios in sports, media and entertainment, but this one might take the crown.

Gavin Newsom is teaming up with Marshawn Lynch and the former NFL star's agent, Doug Hendrickson, for a new podcast. The show is called "Politickin" and will be hosted on iHeartPodcasts beginning on July 15.

Contrary to the podcast's name, Newsom claims there will be no politics on the show. Instead, the hosts will be "bridging gaps" between different lifestyles.

"I need to figure out where [you're] coming from, right," Lynch said in the podcast's introductory episode . "But you need to figure out where [he's] coming from."

The three hosts, while all friends for years, have had vastly different lives. Newsom is the governor of California, Lynch is a Super Bowl-winning running back and Hendrickson is a sports agent.

Why did the trio decide to create this podcast, and how did the team form? The Sporting News answers those questions and more below.

Why is Gavin Newsom starting a podcast with Marshawn Lynch

In this new age of digital media, just about anyone can start a podcast. Neither major equipment nor a fancy studio is necessary, but of course, high-quality microphones will enhance the show.

Newsom is no stranger to placing himself into pop culture, whether that's with his connection to Snoop Dogg or this new venture with Lynch. He's also been friends with the former Seahawks running back for years now.

Newsom was a character witness during Lynch's DUI arrest in 2013 . Years later, the governor had told Lynch California was in fact not banning Skittles , the Super Bowl champ's favorite candy, despite rumors.

Hendrickson was a mutual friend for the two. He had known Newsom for decades and was Lynch's agent since 2007. The trio has reportedly been working on this podcast for more than a year.

Besides their friendship, the podcast is designed to mix different perspectives to allow for a greater understanding of each other. There's apparently no politics involved, but it's likely Newsom touches on his lifestyle as a governor.

The podcast debuts on July 15, which is just a few months ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Newsom isn't running, but he's a popular Democratic candidate to replace Joe Biden if the current president backs out late due to a poor debate performance .

Regardless, the California governor will expand his audience by bringing new perspectives to the table on the show.
