Ever wonder which U.S. cities have the highest percentages of wealthy households ? You’ll find most of them in one state.
Among the top 50 cities for percentage of households earning $200,000+ a year (minimum 25,000 households), a whopping 26 are located in California. The next closest states — Texas and Washington — each place only four cities in the top 50.

Among those top 50 cities, percentages of households earning 200,000+ range from 26% to more than 50%.
Reduce the minimum households to 500, and California still dominates with 14 of the top 50. That easily tops runner-up New York, which has 7 of the top 50. New Jersey, Texas and Virginia each have five. In the No. 1 city on the list, nearly 83% of households top the $200,000 mark.
These figures are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, last conducted in 2022.

Methodology: For this piece, GOBankingRates looked at cities that had the highest percentage of households earning over $200K. GOBankingRates broke this down in both a minimum of 500 households list and a minimum of 25,000 households list. For both, GOBankingRates found the total households and percentage of households earning $200K or more. All data was sourced from the 2022 American Community Survey as conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. All data was collected and is up to date as of June 10, 2024.
