Top Mexican Restaurants in San Leandro

    2021-04-15

If you are not from California, then you may not know that San Leandro is home to a great restaurant scene. With such a wide variety of cultures and cuisines, it is no wonder there are so many delicious options to choose from. The city boasts so many wonderful Mexican food options that it may be a tough task to choose just one. Thankfully, I have done a little sampling and taste testing for you and compiled a list of some of my local favorites. In a previous article, I talked about my favorite Mexican restaurants growing up but after hearing what a lot of others had to say, I decided to explore San Leandro a bit more to try out new restaurants. If you are starting to get a craving for some carne asada, then read on to learn about the three best Mexican restaurants in San Leandro.

    Mama Lupe's Cocina

Doing business in San Leandro for over 25 years, Mama Lupe’s Cocina is located on Farnsworth Street. It is my go-to spot for queso fundido. Queso fundido is a dish of melted cheese and spicy chorizo which I love scooping with some tortilla chips. I suggest starting your meal off with an order of it, but you will definitely want to share so you don’t fill up. If you are able to stop by on a weekend, treat yourself to a bowl of their traditional menudo. For my main dish, I either go with their flauta, chile relleno, and taco combination or their prawn enchiladas. Instead of the usual soft drink, branch out and try their tasty horchata.

What I recommend: Queso fundido, prawn enchiladas

Location: 15033 Farnsworth St San Leandro, CA 94579

    Restaurant San Gaspar

Located on 14th street, San Gaspar restaurant is another great San Leandro spot. If you can get there in time for breakfast, treat yourself to their huevos con chorizo because it may be the best Mexican breakfast you ever try! They have a variety of appetizer options as well. I like to start with an order of chips and guacamole because there's something about their avocados that always come out so fresh tasting. When it comes to a dinner entrée, I find that you can’t go wrong with an order of either their carne asada or their chuletas de puerco. They also carry many sea food options from shrimp cocktail to seven seas soup.

What I recommend: Believe it or not, the crowd pleaser for me were their taquitos!

    Taqueria Los Pericos

It does not need to be a Tuesday for me to head to Taqueirea Los Pericos on Pelton Center Way for tacos. Their awesome tacos are the reason they have been in San Leandro since 1984. Of course, if you are not in a taco mood, they still have you covered. Their breakfast options include bistec and eggs or chilaquiles. For dinner, I suggest trying their double enchilada meal or their tostada de ceviche. All of these choices pair nicely with one of their sweet agua frescas. Be careful not to get too full on all of these offerings. You will want to make sure you have enough room left to try an order of their Mexican custard known as flan.

What I recommend: Love their tacos, but their enchiladas are amazing too

Location: 101 Pelton Center Way San Leandro, CA 94577

If you are in San Leandro and are looking for some authentic Mexican cuisines, check out any of the above options for a meal that is sure to hit the spot. Bring the whole family as these restaurants have such a wide variety of options. Even the fussiest of kids will enjoy their amazing tacos and aguas frescas. When it comes to Mexican food, there is always something for everyone.
