    2021-05-28

For some odd reason, the love of brunch used to be just a little bit taboo. Over the past few years, that attitude has finally changed, and I could not be more excited about it. What is not to love about brunch? It gives us all of those awesome breakfast options that we know and love along with the opportunity to sleep in a little later. The city of Portland has so many delicious brunch options. When in the Portland area, you will want to make sure to schedule plenty of time for this midday meal. If you are looking for a spot to enjoy coffee and a scramble, then keep reading to learn more about the top brunch spots of Portland.

Located on Burnside street in Portland, one of my all time favorite brunch spots in the country is Screen Door simply because they offer everything you would want in a brunch spot. Their chicken and waffles are a must-try item. It features their crispy fried chicken on top of a sweet potato waffle. One of my personal favorites from this restaurant is their friend oysters. I thought it was kind of weird to fry oysters when raw oysters have always been my cup of tea but I was wrong because frying the oysters gave it an even better taste. If you have room, you will want to give their chopped brisket mac and cheese a try. It comes with pickled jalapeños and a drizzle of their Texas style barbecue sauce. As a side, their roasted beet salad is a refreshing and tasty option. They even offer family style meals, so you will want to be sure to bring the whole crew.

What I recommend: fried oysters, eggs Benedict, chicken and waffles

I, for one, am thrilled that someone decided to dedicate an entire restaurant to the biscuit. This flaky fellow is the perfect brunch mate. In business since 2008, their biscuit sandwiches offer something for everyone. My personal favorite is their club which boasts their smoked brisket with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon. They also offer a number of twists on the traditional biscuits and gravy, which is a brunch item I can eat all day. Just the combo of bread and gravy is so tempting to eat it for every meal. For those who are not in it for the biscuits, they offer blueberry cornmeal pancakes and shrimp & grits that are sure to please.

Doing business in the Montavilla neighborhood since 2008, The Observatory offers its own unique twist on brunch. I like to start off with an order of their basil and garlic prawn skewers. For a main dish, they offer a number of creative takes on the traditional burger. You can choose from elk, lamb, or beef. Be sure not to get too full as they make an amazing cinnamon sugar bread pudding that I insist you try. And what would brunch be without an adult beverage? Be sure to give their lavender gin lemon drop a taste.

What I recommend: beef or lamb burger is my go-to

If you were not a fan of brunch, I hope the list above has done its part to change your mind. Brunch is a great way to spend a morning with friends or family, and I truly hope you commit to eating it with your loved ones more often. If you are in the Portland area, give one of these spots a try. I am almost certain they will have you wondering why you don’t eat eggs after 12:00 PM more often.
