My Favorite Mexican Restaurants in Honolulu
2021-07-13
Though some fast-food chains may have tried, it is pretty tough to mess up Mexican food. When it comes to grilled, marinated meats and a spicy kick, traditional Mexican cuisine is always a crowd favorite. Though there are plenty of Hawaiian and Japanese options in Honolulu, many people may not know that they are lucky enough to have a number of delicious Mexican spots as well. If you would like to taste some of the best tacos and enchiladas that the island has to offer, then keep reading to learn more about my favorite Mexican restaurants in Honolulu.
Located on a rooftop, Buho Cocina y Cantina is lucky to boast some spectacular views alongside its modern take on Mexican food. I like to start out with an order of their Mexican street corn with its hint of lime and ancho chili. The taco lovers in your group will enjoy their teriyaki chicken tacos which are a great blend of both Mexican and Japanese flavors. My favorite entree is their Mexican moco loco. It is a beef patty topped with an egg and served with their refreshing guacamole and pico de gallo. Be sure to save room for dessert as you will not want to miss out on their ice cream burrito. It is filled with vanilla ice cream and then deep friend and topped with a strawberry drizzle. What more do you want than a rooftop view of the island while eating some delicious Mexican cuisine!
What I recommend: teriyaki chicken tacos and Mexican moco loco
Location: 2250 Kalakaua Ave Ste 525 Honolulu, HI 96815
If you are looking for the traditional Mexican favorites such as nachos and quesadillas, Mexico Restaurant has them all at an affordable price. I enjoy their nachos topped with kalua pork and salsa fresca. For a main dish, I recommend their Chile relleno. It is stuffed with cheese and fried to crispy perfection. And, as their menu will tell you, these items all pair nicely with one of their frozen margaritas. They are open for breakfast, so stop by early and try one of their machaca and egg burritos. Though it may be tough not to fill up, you will want to save room for an order of their flan. I know it might be weird to come to Hawaii and want Mexican food but the stomach wants what the stomach wants and this restaurant will satisfy your cravings.
If you are looking for some of the best fish tacos around, then look no further than South Shore Grill. This family-owned business has been serving up top-notch Mexican food since 2004. Since it is what they are famous for, I recommend their grilled Cajun ono fish with aioli taco on their locally made corn tortillas. Even the vegetarians can get in on the fun with South Shores’ macadamia nut pesto, carrot, and tomato tacos. And to keep things just a tad Hawaiian, you will want to order a macadamia nut chocolate chip cookie for the road.

Mexican restaurants famously have something for even the fussiest of diners, so they are always a great choice when traveling. Even the kiddos will find something that will encourage them to clean their plates. Whether you are in it for the tacos, the scenery, or both, the above spots are sure to please your entire party.
