    2021-07-17

San Francisco is not just blessed with cool, breezy weather that lasts all year long. It has so much to offer when it comes to sight seeing and tourism. It also has a great mass transit system that makes getting around this great city a snap. Anyone who is planning a trip to the area can easily navigate this hilly place without having to spend a little extra to rent a car. If a trip to San Francisco is in your future, then I have a few suggestions for how you can spend your time. Read on to learn more about what to do when visiting San Francisco.

    Yerba Buena Gardens

Often describes as the cultural heart of San Francisco, Yerba Buena Gardens is a gorgeous way to spend time in the city. Spend time viewing the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Take in one of their amazing farmer’s markets. Admire the numerous pieces of public art. Plan ahead to check out any upcoming performances that may be on the calendar. There are plenty of ways to spend your time here that allow you to eat, play, or shop. If none of those sounds appealing, then bring a nice blanket and spend an afternoon relaxing on the lawn.

What I recommend: Come early in the mornings or in the evening for the golden hour pictures

    Alcatraz Island

Any fans of crime and punishment will enjoy a day spent on Alcatraz. This famed former prison is just a boat ride away. Tours offer visitors the opportunity to learn all about the history of the prison, the inmate housing conditions, and what those inmates were in for. In addition to tours of the island prison, they also have tours of the bay that include an up-close look at the island and the Golden Gate Bridge without having to disembark. The tours will teach visitors all about the history of not only Alcatraz but the surrounding landmarks that the city is known for. If you go to Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, you can really get a good view of the island without having to go near the island. But other than that, there are multiple cruises where you can swing by and take pictures with the island.

Get out those hiking shoes and get ready to burn some calories on the 900+ foot hike to the top of Twin Peaks. Once you reach the summit, you will take in some of the most spectacular views of the city and the bay. It is a great way to take in the beautiful scenery while possibly burning off some of the calories gained by eating a sourdough bowl full of clam chowder. If you enjoy staying active to relaxing when you are on vacation, then this is certainly somewhere that you will want to check out. It is also perfect for those who enjoy catching a glimpse of the local wildlife. You may be lucky enough to see a few of the endangered Mission Blue Butterflies.

What I recommend: Look up the weather before going. Most of the time it's foggy so find a clear day

There are so many ways to spend your time when visiting San Francisco. Those who like to kick back and relax will enjoy their wonderful gardens. History buffs will enjoy learning about the origins of a famous prison. Hikers will appreciate a great workout with a view. You may want to plan some extra time if you can’t decide which of these options to choose from.
