Dayton Championship Rodeo Begins Friday thru Labor Day
DAYTON, Iowa—A Labor Day Holiday Tradition, the Annual Dayton Championship Rodeo will begin Friday. The PRCA Championship Rodeo will begin each evening at 7:00 and Monday at 1:30. The 2024 Dayton Championship Rodeo Senior Queen is Kalie Buenting and the Junior Queen is Kyla Egli. They will be joined this year by several visiting queens including Miss Rodeo Iowa – Lillie Longhorn, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa – Lily Schulenburg, and Miss Sidney, IA Rodeo – Jessica Meseck. This year, the queens and drill team can sign autographs AFTER the rodeo. We will be set up everyday on top of the hill at a long, white table. Autographs are free to all.

Rockets begin VB season with victory!
Coach Makayla Spaar’s Paton-Churdan varsity volleyball team hosted Storm Lake St. Mary’s in Churdan on Thursday night with P-C winning in four sets. Scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13, and the Rockets broke an 18 match losing streak dating back to the 2022 season. St. Mary’s continues their long losing streak after going 0-16 last season.
Thursday X-C, Football tonight for Rams
Greene County sent it’s cross-country teams to the Municipal Golf Course in Gowrie on Thursday night for an event hosted by Southeast Valley. Coach Jeff Lamoureux watched his boys’ squad finish eighth among 13 teams while the girls did not have enough girls finish the race to qualify for a team score.
Chargers Cross Country in Action Tonight
The AC/GC Chargers cross country teams will be on the road tonight. The Chargers are heading to Gowrie Municipal Golf Course for a meet hosted by the Southeast Valley Jaguars. This is the first meet of the season for AC/GC and their new head coach Rick Blake. Familiar faces also competing include the Greene County Rams, Madrid Tigers, Panorama Panthers, Perry Bluejays, West Central Valley Wildcats and Woodward Academy Knights. In Class 1A after the preseason rankings, the Chargers boys cross country team is currently ranked 3rd, and the girls team is ranked 5th.
Rams to Gowrie for SE Valley Coed X-C
It’s the season opener for the Greene County High School cross-country runners later today in Gowrie on the Municipal Golf Course hosted by Southeast Valley. Veteran Coach Jeff Lamoureux has two-time State Meet qualifier Noah Hinote leading the boys’ team, which has about a dozen members, which is enough for a varsity and JV. The girls started the season with seven, which is enough to field a varsity team.
Volleyball opener at home tonight for P-C
Coach Makayla Spaar’s Paton-Churdan volleyball program opens the 2024 season at home vs. Storm Lake St. Mary’s. The JV match is at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow. One of these teams will end a long losing streak tonight as the Panthers went 0-16 last season and the Rockets were 0-14.
