Koehler: Local school districts receiving new funding from the state
PEORIA, Ill. – Eighteen area school districts will be receiving nearly $8 million for much needed improvements to classrooms and school buildings. Democratic State Sen. Dave Koehler, of Peoria, says the money is coming from the 2017 Illinois Senate Democrat-backed evidence-based funding formula, which overhauled the way Illinois funds its K-12 schools.
Local nursing homes cited and fined
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced that it has posted the 2024 Second Quarterly Report of Nursing Home Violations. Five facilities around the state were cited with type “AA” violations of the Nursing Home Care Act during the second quarter of 2024, the most severe type of violation.

Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr., the Hammond Parks and Recreation Department, and the Hammond Sportsplex are excited to announce their newest event: The First Responder Games. The Hammond Sportsplex will host a series of tournaments for local fire and police departments. Towns, cities, universities, volunteer departments, counties, and state are encouraged to send their police and/or fire teams to compete. For each tournament, one side of the bracket will be fire departments pitted against each other, with police vying for top spot on the other side. The fire winner will take on the police winner to determine the champion. Team registration is free.

4 Chicagoans who stole clothing from Oak Brook mall could get 7 years in prison: prosecutors
DUPAGE COUNTY - Four Chicago residents were arrested following separate incidents at two Oak Brook stores this week, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Talia Martinez-Pacheco, 23, and Santiago Rojas-Galea, 18, were charged after allegedly stealing nearly $2,400 worth of clothing from Macy's at Oakbrook Center on August 21. That same day, Cheryl Gryer, 26, and Daiveon Watson, 21, were accused of taking more than $800 in merchandise from Nordstrom at the mall.

Police find man shot to death in South Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was found shot and killed Friday night in South Chicago.Police said officers responded to a ShotSpotter call in the 7900 block of South Phillips Avenue just after 11 p.m.The victim, between 35-40 years of age, was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.Chicago fire crews arrived to treat the victim, who died at the scene. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.As of Saturday, no arrests were made. Area 2 detectives were investigating.
