The Republican Women Leaders of Calvert recently announced that Theresa Grover and Trevor MacWilliams are the recipients of the 2024 Joyce Lyons Terhes Memorial Scholarship

A news release said the students “demonstrated their commitment to the philosophy and initiatives of the Republican Party and their support of conservative causes.”

The scholarship honors the memory of the trailblazing educator who worked as a social studies teacher, curriculum developer, and school administrator. However, her hard work didn’t stop there.

In the 1980s, Terhes volunteered for various charitable and civic groups and she founded the Dunkirk Area Concerned Citizens Association and served as its first president. Her leadership and activism significantly shaped the political landscape of Calvert County.

She was the first Republican woman elected as a county commissioner in Calvert, where she served two terms from 1986-1994 where she consistently received the most votes in both elections. Her success led to her recruitment by the state party, where she served nearly 10 years as chairman of the Maryland Republican Party. Afterward, she represented Maryland as the Republican National Committeewoman for over a decade and earned national respect and admiration.

Known affectionately as Maryland’s “Iron Lady,” Terhes received numerous awards for her contributions and was a founding member of the RWLC. She died in 2018 and left behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.

The RWLC encourages eligible students to apply for next year’s scholarship.
