Author Daniel Meier was recently recognized for his novels at The Hollywood Book Festival in Hollywood, Calif. Grand jury indicts three for attempted murder
Three men who allegedly stole over $2,000 worth of merchandise from a Dunkirk grocery store and then allegedly attempted to kill two state troopers while trying to get away have each been served 13-count indictments by a Calvert County grand jury. Members of the Calvert school board raised concerns last week for the future of their high schools’ Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program if they cannot find teachers and continue to see critically low enrollment numbers. Eric Packard of Calvert County has earned a Master Angler Milestone Award under the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ FishMaryland program. Plans for new Solomons fire boat lead to questions
Three items listed on the Calvert County commissioners’ consent agenda Tuesday sparked some discussion and requests for clarification. According to two memos to the commissioners from Barbara Warner, the county public safety grants writer, the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department has requested $1 million in grant funding from the county to buy a new fire boat. Barn damaged by fire
On July 4, firefighters were dispatched to a barn fire on Walton Road in Huntingtown. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze resulted in $225,000 damage to the structure, which is owned by Michael Smith. There were no injuries reported. Investigators said the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the fire marshal’s Southern Regional office at 410-414-3600.

Woman charged in connection with hit and run On June 30 at 2:05 a.m., officers responded to Mall Circle in Waldorf for the report of a hit-and-run crash. While officers were on the scene, the driver of the striking vehicle was observed in the parking lot. Calvert DAR honors Dunkle for her work with Title IX
Margaret Dunkle, “the unsung heroine” of the implementation of Title IX, spent much of her life advocating for the equal treatment of women. Her research laid the groundwork for the regulations that protect and support women college athletes. The John Hanson Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored Dunkle last month as a notable Woman in American History. Crews battle Dunkirk fire
During the early morning hours of July 6, firefighters from Calvert, Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties were dispatched to a fire on Old Jones Road in Dunkirk. “Upon arrival, our units found a significant fire in the attached garage, which had started to extend into the main part of the home,” a report from the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department stated. “Fortunately, all residents had self-evacuated before our arrival.” Crews operated at the site for over three hours.

Fines for signs On April 1, the department of public works began removing unauthorized signs alongside county roadways. Removed signs are being stored at the Appeal Landfill, located at 401 Sweetwater Road, for two weeks. Individuals and businesses may reclaim their signs for a $6 fee per sign.
