CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ( WBZ NewsRadio ) — A man's body was recovered from the Charles River Monday, Massachusetts State Police said.

State police said the search began around 11:30 a.m. when witnesses reported seeing a man struggling in the water in the area of the Longfellow Bridge. The man appeared to jump from the bridge, struggled to stay afloat, and called for help before fully submerging.

The search and recovery effort was a joint operation between MSP, Massachusetts Environmental Police, the Boston Fire Department, the Boston Police Department, the Cambridge Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Massport Fire Department.

Divers made the recovery at approximately 1:50 p.m., officials said.

The victim is a 34-year-old male who is believed to be homeless, according to authorities.

Troopers from the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County are conducting the death investigation. The chief medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

No other information is available at this time.
