N.H. Fish and Game received a report Saturday, June 29, around 6 p.m. about a hiker in distress at Mt. Major.

Much like the hapless Velma on “Scooby-Doo,” a Massachusetts woman found herself in an unfortunate predicament this past weekend after she lost her glasses and couldn’t find her way down Mt. Major in Alton Bay, New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers received a report Saturday, June 29, around 6 p.m. about a hiker in distress who had lost her glasses and was off-trail at Mt. Major. In a subsequent interview, the woman — a 28-year-old Cambridge resident — told officers she had dropped her glasses off the edge of a cliff and scrambled down to look for them.

Unfortunately she couldn’t find the missing glasses, and when she climbed back up, she also couldn’t locate the trail she’d been hiking on, she told the officers.

After she called for assistance, New Hampshire 911 was able to pinpoint the hiker’s location with GPS coordinates and relayed that information to rescue personnel. Fire and rescue crews found the woman around 6:50 p.m. about a quarter mile from the mountain’s peak.

In a statement, New Hampshire Fish and Game reminded hikers to “always be prepared and plan for the unexpected.”
