CAMBRIDGE — Before being transported to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on no bond for assault charges, a Cambridge man told police that he had been assaulted by another individual several days before.

Marco Ray Wilkes, 42, of Cambridge, was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and malicious destruction of property.

According to a news release from the Cambridge Police Department, officers responded to the 400 block of Willis Street on May 30 regarding a physical disturbance. When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim and a witness, both of whom reported that the victim had been assaulted by Wilkes.

Police said they reported Wilkes strangled and struck the victim multiple times, and the witness pepper sprayed Wilkes to stop the assault. They reported that Wilkes left the residence and damaged the windows of the property.

Police said officers found Wilkes around Park Lane, and Wilkes fled from officers on foot into a wooded area. The officers located Wilkes again in the 500 block of Edgewood Avenue, and Wilkes was transported to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center for injuries sustained while damaging the windows of the Willis Street residence.

Police said Wilkes was later transported to the police department before being turned over the the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on no bond.

While being processed at the Cambridge Police Department, police said Wilkes told officers that he had been assaulted by Rajame Charaka Zague Cooper, 30, of Cambridge, several days before Wilkes was charged with assault. Police said Wilkes told officers that Cooper had threatened him with a knife.

On May 31, Cooper was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure. He was transported to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on no bond.
