CAMBRIDGE TWP. — The position of treasurer in Cambridge Township, currently held by Shawna Rohrbach, will be decided during the Aug. 6 primary election, as both candidates — Brooke Armstrong and Diane Higgins — are seeking the Republican Party nomination. There were not any Democrat Party candidates who filed for the primary in Cambridge Township.

Rohrbach was elected to the treasurer position in 2020 and is not seeking reelection.

In-person voting will take place on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Absentee ballots may be requested from township clerks.

The Daily Telegram sent questionnaires to the candidates in the contested primary races. Below are the responses from Armstrong and Higgins. Their responses are printed as provided.

    Brooke Armstrong

    Age: 31.

Occupation: Teacher at Onsted Community Schools.

Spouse/kids: AJ Armstrong, three boys: Rhett, Asher and Brecken.

Government experience/volunteer/service/involvement: District implementation team, building implementation team, various coaching, pitching lessons, tutoring and mentoring.

Why are you running for this position? I believe the township needs more community input, respectful discussion and responsible spending of taxpayer’s money. I believe I can help the township work toward future goals for our community by providing insight from the many different perspectives and experiences I have had with my previous contacts and roles.

What do you think are the major issues facing Cambridge Township and what should be done about them? As a member of the community, I understand a major concern to the taxpayers is fiscal responsibility. It’s important to me that we keep the community informed by being as transparent as possible and act responsibly with taxpayers’ money. We should provide the best and appropriate services for our township that meets the long-term goals of our community that should include business and residential growth. I also understand the importance of protecting our natural resources. We should work to preserve what makes Cambridge Township unique. I also believe there are issues that all taxpayers are impacted by. With the cost of services increasing, we can prevent the need for increasing taxes by increasing the tax base by working with community leaders and experts to develop a long-term plan for all of Cambridge Township.

Why should people vote for you? Having lived in Onsted my entire life, I am committed to bringing new ideas to our community. My agenda prioritizes the best interests of everyone in Cambridge Township. As a teacher, I’ve worked on the BIT/DIT teams collaborating to find ways to improve the quality of education within our school district. For example, I helped to update the onboarding process for new teachers, as well as created and implemented a curriculum map. I understand how to implement goals and objectives to meet deadlines. I have experience in working with accounts receivable, payable and collections for small businesses.

    Occupation: Retired.

Spouse/Kids: I have been married to my husband Michael for 39 years.

Government experience: For 29 years I worked in banking, which is heavily regulated by the federal government. During those years I worked with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA and USDA which are all government agencies and being audited yearly by each of them.

Volunteer/service/ involvement: I have been the treasurer for CPIH (Citizens Protect Irish Hills} since we started the Michigan nonprofit 2 1/2 years ago. I am a member of the Lake Preservation Council.

Why are you running for this position? I am running for treasurer because I have the experience and background to keep the township moving forward and I can further enhance the communication between the board, the township departments and their constituents.

What do you think are the major issues facing Cambridge Township and what should be done about them? The threats to our local community on land and resources: The preservation of this area is crucial for all citizens, business owners and visitors to be able to continue to enjoy.

Why should people vote for you? Because I can fulfill the obligations of the treasurer position without conflicting employment obligations, along with my experience and background will make me the perfect fit for the treasurer position.
