With Cambridge up 5-0 after the fifth inning, it looked like Tuesday’s game between the Pumas and Blue Jays was going to be a stress-free win for Cambridge.

Instead, the game got a lot more interesting.

The Pumas rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, but the Blue Jays scored twice in the top of the seventh to score a 7-5 win over Poynette on Tuesday, May 21 at Pauquette Park.

Senior Owen Bernhardt drove in the go-ahead run for Cambridge, hitting an RBI double with one out in the seventh to score junior Clayton Stenjem. Bernhardt then scored on an RBI single from senior Brayden Lund during the next at-bat.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pumas loaded the bases with two outs, but Cambridge sophomore pitcher Cal Nottestad recorded a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch to clinch the win.

Nottestad pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, earning the win with one strikeout. Senior Devin Schuchart pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and recording five strikeouts in a no-decision.

Lund and Bernhardt both led Cambridge with two RBIs, while sophomore Jett Horton, senior Marco Damiani and senior Gavin Winslow each knocked in a run.

In the Poynette five-run sixth, Justin Wells hit a two-run single, while Chase Hansen recorded an RBI single. Wyatt Breuch and Owen Breuch also scored on separate Cambridge errors in the inning.

Cambridge closes out the regular season with a record of 15-5 and finished first in the Capitol South with a record of 9-1.

The Blue Jays will take on the winner of Poynette/Wisconsin Heights on Tuesday, May 28 in the regional semifinal at CHS.
