Throughout their senior season, Cambridge seniors Julia Schneider and Saveea Freeland have played on the same team.

The seniors played on the volleyball and girls basketball team, while also batting first and second in the softball lineup.

With the Cambridge softball season over, the pair find themselves on the same team once again.

The Capitol South all-conference first team.

Schneider and Freeland were two of five Blue Jays to be named to the Capitol South all-conference team.

Along with earning first team honors, Freeland was named to the all-state second team and was chosen to the all-district team.

In all four seasons on varsity, Freeland earned all-state and all-district honors. Freeland batted over .400 in each season, had 60 RBIs and four home runs.

Freeland finished this season with a .414 batting average, 14 RBIs, one home run and was 12-12 in stolen bases.

As the team’s pitcher, Freeland recorded 30 strikeouts and went 4-5 in conference play.

“Saveea is in a tough position when she’s got to pitch all of the time (because) she’s a true middle infielder, but she had a great career,” said Cambridge head coach Dean Freeland. “She made all-state all four years, first team all-district all four years and was (conference) player of the year for two years.”

In conference play, Schneider batted .368 with four RBIs. Schneider also stole three bases, hit a triple and scored seven runs.

“Julia has improved every year defensively, and she had some huge hits for us this year,” said Freeland. “I was super proud of her getting first team, she deserved it for sure.”

“Both of those kids are going to be greatly missed next year,” Freeland added.

Along with the two seniors, junior Megan Bernhardt was named to the second team. Bernhardt hit .227 at the plate with four RBIs.

Coach Freeland credited Bernhardt’s fielding ability for why she got the honor.

“Megan had a fantastic year at first base,” said Freeland. “She missed first team by a point or two, and she deserved to be first team. She saved a whole bunch of runs at first base this year.”

Sophomore Finley Tuscic was named to the all-conference second team. Tuscic batted .350 in conference play with two RBIs and five runs scored. Tuscic also hit a home run during the season.

“Finley did an outstanding job at third base, it’s one of the hardest positions to play,” said Freeland. “She never played it before last year, and she improved a lot.”

Freshman Kimmy Roidt was named to the all-conference team as an honorable mention. In her first year starting at catcher, Roidt batted .400 in conference play with one home run and four RBIs.

“She’s a lot like her sister, she was thrown into that catcher’s role because we had no one else,” said Freeland. “She really made significant improvements by the end of the year.”
