CAMBRIDGE — As head coach of the Cambridge varsity baseball team, Larry Martin has seen the program rise to regular conference title contenders.

With the program in a good spot, Martin decided to step down from his head coaching role, a role he has held for the last seven seasons.

“I felt that a younger energy was needed for the program to continue on what we had built,” Martin said. “When I started, the program was kind of down to the bare bones and a lot of work has been put into building it up.”

Martin, who has been coaching baseball for over 38 years, has been with the Cambridge program for the last nine years. In seven seasons as head coach, Martin compiled a record of 66-58.

In the Capitol South Conference, Martin guided the Blue Jays to conference titles in 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024 and held a conference record of 37-23. Martin holds each conference title win as a favorite memory he has with the program.

“With 2019, it kind of came out of nowhere and we caught a hot streak and won a conference championship. In 2021, we had a nice mix of different classes where they all contributed,” Martin said. “2023 was unexpected as well, but there was a lot of talent there, and 2024 was the culmination of a run for this senior class where they’ve won three out of the last four conference titles.”

In the last four seasons, Martin, along with the 2024 senior class, compiled a record of 54-34, winning three conference titles in that span.

Martin still plans to teach at the high school, using the extra free time to devote to lessons. Martin also plans to devote extra time to things outside of teaching as well.

While he won’t be coaching the Blue Jays anymore, Martin still plans to watch Cambridge’s home games.

“There are players that I still have connections to in the program, and there are coaches that I have connections to in the conference as well, so I still want to see that play out,” Martin said. “I love the game deeply, so I still want to continue to do that.”
