Roundup: Camden-Wyoming stays alive in District I Majors; Hens' Yarns honored

Camden-Wyoming beat Felton 14-8 on Monday evening to stay alive in the Major League baseball District I tournament.

C-W (2-1) is slated to play again today at 8:30 p.m. in the losers’ bracket at MOT.

It will face either Dover or Smyrna-Clayton in Little League’s age group for 11-12 year olds.

Milford and MOT will play in the winners’ bracket finals today at 6 p.m. in Middletown.

After beating Smyrna-Clayton, 12-2, in the late game on Saturday, Milford is 2-0 in the tourney. MOT is 1-0 after having a first-round bye.

MOT has won 10 of the last 11 district titles, including two in a row.

In the District III Majors tourney, Lewes is scheduled to face Georgetown in the winners’ bracket finals today at 7 p.m. at Millsboro.

MOT is also hosting the three-team state tourney beginning on July 24.

8-10 tournament

Smyrna 22, Dover 0: Smyrna-Clayton earned another game in the District I tournament with the victory on Monday night.

Smyrna-Clayton (1-1) will play again today at 8:30 p.m. in Milford in the losers’ bracket when it takes on either Milford or Felton.

Pitchers Dominick Ciglinsky, James Jarman Jr and Dylan Zarkowski combined to allow only one hit and a pair of walks in three innings.

Lawson Barthelmeh and Easton Flatter had three RBI for Smyrna-Clayton while Davin Kaminski went 3-for-3 and threw out a runner trying to steal.

Pitcher Ryland Little had a hit for Dover.

MOT (2-0) and Camden-Wyoming (1-0) face each other in the winners’ bracket today at 6 p.m.

College football

Hens’ Yarns earns pre-season honor: Delaware running back Marcus Yarns has earned preseason All-America honors as he has been named to the FCS Football Central Preseason All-American Team as an all-purpose player.

This is Yarn’s first preseason accolade after being named to the FCS Football Central All-American third-team last season.

Yarns received his first All-America award after a breakout 2023 season for the Blue Hens, leading the team with 939 rushing yards to earn All-CAA second-team recognition. He ranked fourth in the nation with 6.90 yards per carry and had four games with at least 100 yards rushing.

Yarns accounted for 1,250 total all-purpose yards as he also caught 24 passes for 311 yards. Yarns ranked second in the country with 18 total touchdowns on the season, and fourth with 15 rushing scores which ranked ninth in Delaware’s single-season history.

The Salisbury, Md. native scored at least one touchdown in nine of UD’s 13 games and had multiple scores in six games, highlighted by a five-touchdown performance at Towson that earned him CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors.
