Down Syndrome Association to host iCan Swim camp

CAMDEN — The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware will be hosting its first iCan Swim camp for individuals with Down syndrome this week.

The program will take place Monday through Friday at the John C. Charlton School.

It focuses on teaching those with Down syndrome and other disabilities to swim, as well as instilling other basic water safety skills. It’s open to ages 3 and up.

The camp’s 20 spots quickly sold out.

Each participant has unique goals, which range from an introduction to water exploration, learning water safety in aquatic environments, learning to swim and/or skill refinement.

The goals are accomplished in a safe, supportive, inclusive environment with the assistance of volunteers. A certified, paid lifeguard will be on-site at all times, and the event requires a 1-to-1 ratio of volunteers and participants.

Thanks to the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware’s supporters, the registration fees were reduced to $150 per attendee.

Scholarships were also available to any camper who needed assistance, with more than 60% of swimmers attending for free.

ICan Swim is part of iCan Shine, a nonprofit that provides recreational programs for individuals with disabilities.

Founded in 1979, the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware is a nonprofit that works to ensure individuals with Down syndrome are healthy, happy and successful.
